The Chair produced by De Coene Kortrijk for Knoll is a design by Harry Bertoia in 1952.
In Bertoia's own words: “When you look at these chairs, they seem mainly made of air.
This Knoll lounge set is in very good and exceptionally beautiful authentic condition. This is a first edition produced by De Coene Kortrijk in the late 1950s.
The Bertoia Diamond chair is equipped with a rare footstool from the same period, both with a wonderful patina and in exceptional original condition without damage to the welding! Which is very exceptional!

Bertoia left Italy at the age of 15 and studied painting and sculpture in Detroit. In 1937 he became a teacher at the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts and at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. In the 1940s he started experimenting with metal to design furniture.
His most famous designs consist of 'metal wire' and are a logical consequence of his activities as a sculptor. Bertoia jokingly remarked of his own furniture that 'the space passed right through them' and 'it's as if they were made out of air'. Nevertheless, his sculpture-like designs are a model of comfort and functionality.
