Maarten Van Severen is without a doubt the most important Belgian designer of the past two decades. His furniture designs with their typical clear lines are known all over the world.
At the end of the eighties he started making furniture in his own studio in Ghent. The designs are simple, clear and well thought out. They reflect his search for perfection in design, detail and realization. He prefers to call himself a maximalist – someone who tirelessly uses all his energy, knowledge and resources to achieve the desired end result, even if it ultimately seems minimalist.
His goal was that a piece of furniture should look 'as if it had always been there'.
Van Severen died at the age of 48.
